What the premium over pressure-treated actually buys

Cedar sits between pressure-treated and composite on price, and the honest reason to choose it is the finish. Side by side with treated lumber, the difference in tone and grain is obvious, and it stays obvious for the life of the deck. Its natural rot resistance is real and helps the decking itself, but it is not a substitute for correct structural work underneath and should not be sold as one.

The framing rules that do not change

The framing rules do not change because the decking is cedar. Footings still go below frost depth — roughly 1.2 metres through Moncton, Dieppe, and Riverview. Drainage still has to move water away from posts and out of joist pockets. The ledger still has to be flashed and fastened so water is directed away from the house rather than trapped against the sheathing. Cedar changes the surface you see and touch, not the engineering below it.

Seal it or let it grey, but choose

What cedar does over time is a genuine decision rather than a maintenance problem. Left alone, it weathers to a soft silver-grey — the same thing cedar shingles and barn board do across the Maritimes, and a look plenty of homeowners specifically want. Sealed, it holds the warm reddish-brown it starts with, and that is a commitment you keep making every few years rather than a single step at the end of the build. Neither is wrong. What matters is deciding which one you are choosing.
